Information For New Students

Upon reaching Kansas State University/Manhattan

  1. Go to International Student Center (ISC) to fill a work permit form and other necessary documents. Work permit form is filled if you have already got an assistantship when you come to Manhattan. In case you do not have an assistantship, you will have to find one after coming here at K-state. Once you get your part-time job or assistantship, you can apply for your SSN and get one. Even if you have an assistantship, you can apply for it after 10 days. At 11th day, you will get a number through mail. By giving this number to the payroll department in your respective department, your payroll will be started from that day.

  2. Note: SSN is the most important thing every individual should have here in states, thus make sure you find a job and get your SSN processed soon. The procedure for the same will be explained to all the new students by your host at K-State.

  3. Go to Graduate school (Fairchild Hall) with the original mark sheets and degree certificate or provisional mark sheets/certificate. The school will keep photocopies for them and will return the original.

  4. Get your K-state ID card. It can be obtained from K-state Student Union.

  5. Go to bank and open the account in the bank. Deposit cash or travelers checks in the bank and take temporary checks from the bank. You can order extra checkbooks by paying some money when you get your permanent address. This permanent address will be printed on your checks. Commerce bank has a branch in the K-State Union so it is easy to do transactions. Federal Union is also close to the Union. Federal bank has the provision to give auto loans. 

  6. Go to Lafene health Center and take the health insurance. You can pay here by checks given by the bank. (you can get an application from for the same from the Student Union itself during the student orientation time, no need to go all the way to Lafene). 

  7. Go for Skin PPD test (TB test). (Students are not required to get their PPD test done from India. As it is not valid here. Students are required to take this test at Lafene.) The result of this test is available after 48 hours. If the test is negative then no problem and if positive then you are supposed to undergo chest x-ray. Keep your x-ray you had in India with you. You cannot enroll in the courses till you have completed your Skin PPD test.

  8. (Note: Lafene Health center usually holds a camp at ISC for this test. The dates and timings for this will be announced by ISC when you attend the orientation program arranged by ISC). 

  9. Go to department. If you are assigned an advisor, visit your advisor or take appointment with him/her.

  10. Go to International student center and tell them that you are a new student and would like to know if any other formalities apart from those which you have completed needs to be finished. They will tell you if as an International student you have missed any of it.

  11. Attend the graduate student and International student orientations and department orientation if any.
